Letter: Sadly, church is beyond repair

In response to the Feb. 18 letter to the editor "Preserve past, strengthen future, save steeples," I agree that the church steeples in New England are beautiful. But having a building of this nature sit empty is not good.

I walked by St. Francis of Assisi Church in North Adams many times while staying with a friend last fall and noticed bricks and trash surrounding it. This is not beautiful, it is sad. With a building being empty for so many years and not maintained it would take hundreds of thousands of dollars to bring it back to life, especially in this economy. Where would this money come from?

I love historic buildings as much as the next guy, but in this case, with neglect and no repairs, over time the building will just come crashing down. Let's all move on.
