Letter: Say no to electronic billboard
To the editor of THE EAGLE:
The approval of an electronic billboard (or any billboard for that matter) at the corner of East and Elm streets shocked me. I thought we were trying to attract visitors to the natural beauty of our city and not recreate the visual pollution of billboards that plague some larger urban areas.
Presently there is no billboard at that spot, so to add a new one is beyond my comprehension. The merchants at that corner have painted and improved their buildings, and the city planted numerous trees nearby. This is not the place for a new board.
Wonder why the tourist dollars are going north and south of us? These towns are eliminating commercial clutter, yet we are adding to it. Pittsfield's elected leaders need to stand up, speak out and protect what charm this city has left. I can guarantee you once that billboard is put up it will never come down. Please do not let this happen!
