Letter: See Memories in the Making

To the editor of THE EAGLE:

The Berkshire Alzheimer’s Partnership and Downtown Pittsfield Inc. are proud to present 20 special works of art this Friday at First Friday’s Artswalk. Memories in the Making is a unique program of the Alzheimer’s Association which allows persons with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia to express themselves through painting. The loss of language, often a hallmark of Alzheimer’s, doesn’t mean the loss of desire to express oneself. Art can open a door to memories lost. It can create new pathways to communicate and connect with loved ones and caregivers.

The Memories in the Making program focuses on what a participant can do and not on skills that have been lost. It empowers older adults and allows them to share parts of themselves with others around them. Through the creative process of painting, these individuals speak to us, offering the essence of themselves. Where words fail, the soul of the artist still shines through.

Please stop by from 5-8 p.m. at 33 Dunham Mall, across from Pittsfield City Hall. Enjoy a glass of wine, a bite to eat, some beautiful music and the unique artwork of some very special Berkshire artists.

The writer is a member of the Berkshire Alzheimer’s Partnership.
