Letter: Smith didn't bump Lagarde

To the editor of THE EAGLE:

I agree with the editorial of June 7 ("Williams' litmus test); it is concerning that students at colleges are unwilling to listen to a commencement speaker who may not share their point of view. It is also concerning that this editorial is factually incorrect.

The editorial opines that Williams hasn't "embarrassed itself to the extent of two other Massachusetts colleges -- Smith, which withdrew its invitation to . . . Christine Lagarde and Brandeis." Smith did not withdraw its invitation to Ms. Lagarde. Ms Lagarde, perhaps following the lead of Condoleezza Rice who withdrew as speaker at Rutgers, notified Smith that she was withdrawing her acceptance of the invitation in light of the protests. The editorial board of the Eagle embarrasses itself by its disregard of the facts.
