Letter: Treating illness that is addiction
To the editor of THE EAGLE:
As usual, Ruth Bass has come up with an interesting column, "The twins: Vicodin and heroin" (March 3). I would like to recommend a most informative book on the subject of opiate drugs and also of marijuana, "Clean," by David Sheff. The book proposes more effective ways of preventing and treating drug abuse.
In the preface, Sheff writes, "Using drugs or not isn’t about willpower or character. Most problematic drug use is related to stress, trauma, genetic predisposition, mild or serious mental illness, use at an early age, or some of combination of those ... The addictive are gravely ill."
