Letter: Volunteers step up for senior citizens

Volunteers step up for senior citizens

To the editor:

We live in a time when a lot of our energy is focused on the negative and what is not going right in the world. Let us take a moment to focus on something positive! There is something going right in our community and I would like to express my gratitude.

I am the executive director for the Council on Aging in Sheffield. Our goal is to facilitate seniors' ability to enjoy a high quality of life with our mission statement "to provide life-enriching activities, relevant information on issues that affect them, and assist them in obtaining services necessary to their well-being."

This is a rather large responsibility with many different needs, services and programs that we implement in order to expand our services and grow. Our Council on Aging is able to accomplish what we do on a daily basis because of the support we continually receive from our volunteers who donate their time!

To give you an idea of some of the programs that are able to thrive with the support of volunteers: the "Meals on Wheels", weekly congregate meals, the "Friendly Visitor" program, our art and Spanish classes, daily reception support, many of our well-checks, our new and highly successful transportation program and so much more! A lot of what our volunteers do is an essential part to our seniors' well-being and overall quality of life.

What is exceptionally heart-warming is to observe the volunteers go above and beyond the "job" or given task. It truly is the extra touch of kindness that changes an ordinary moment into a special one. On any given day it can be a few extra moments to chat, following up on a need they observe or giving them an extra treat they know will be enjoyed. Our community knows how to take care of each other and does it really well!

In closing, I would like to thank the Egremont Garden Club for making such beautiful flower arrangements and the sweet generosity of Susan Young, for making and donating jam, which were both delivered to all the Meals on Wheels recipients.

The best part of my position is watching such kindness and generosity every single day! Thank you to all the volunteers who donate their time to make a difference in someone else's life.

Jennifer Goewey Sheffield The writer is executive director, Sheffield Senior Center & Council on Aging.
