Letter: Wave of violence engulfs Chicago

To the editor of THE EAGLE:

Over the Easter weekend, there were nine people killed and 45 wounded in Chicago as a result of gang- and drug-related violence. As outrageous as this is, it hardly make a ripple in news reporting. Because Chicago is the murder capital of America, I guess nothing that happens there is shocking anymore.

When the Chicago police chief was interviewed and asked what could be done to stem this wave of violence, the best he could offer was, of course, the old standby, more gun control. Is this the best he has to offer? Chicago already has some of the toughest gun control laws in the nation. You can see how effective that approach has been. It is almost impossible to legally buy or possess a firearm in Chicago. The law-abiding citizens are not allowed to protect themselves but thugs can walk around armed to the teeth, not unlike many major urban areas where only the law-abiding citizens are restricted thanks to ill-conceived gun control laws.

If the police are not capable of handling this problem, perhaps the National Guard should be called in to assist. I am not fond of the idea of armed troops patrolling our streets but the situation in Chicago is getting desperate.
