Letter: Weather notwithstanding, Beach Day a success

Weather notwithstanding, Beach Day a success

To the editor:

Friday, July 15, was an unusual Eagle Street beach day, my 18th annual — we didn't have perfect weather. Nevertheless, hundreds of kids and their families came out. The sand was packed with kids an hour before the event began, and then, during the evening, how much fun it was to sip margaritas on the sand while listening to singer Lita Williams!

My first thanks goes to Specialty Minerals for donating 500,000 pounds of sand, delivered and picked up by North Adams' great public services crew. For their efforts, the city gets to keep and use all that sand for playgrounds and winter use — a win-win for all!

In addition to having fun in the sand, every kid received prizes. The Steeplecats' "Slider" gave away 250 baseball tickets; First Baptist gave away 496 ice cream cones and All Saints gave away an equal number of cold lemonades; Mildred-Elley handed out 300 sand buckets/shovels; Adams Community Bank handed out Nerf toys; MountainOne Bank gave out balls and sunglasses; Jack's gave away bottles and holders; and gift certificates from Desperados Restaurant were given to those sand-artists who survived the rain. Desperados also helped organized the evening's Mexican Fiesta.

For an event of this size, there are always some expenses, and cash donations were made by Adams Community Bank and Smith, Watson & Co., CPAs. Thanks for the hard work by Don Dix and Derek Wlodyka and other volunteers. Additional support was given by the Berkshire Art Museum, Suzy Helme of the tourist office (who also labored with shovel to help spread the sand), and the merchants on historic Eagle Street.

Families/kids had fun and the street looked better than ever. See you next year on July 14 — but play it safe and come in a bathing suit!

Eric Rudd, North Adams
