Local bar boycotts Coors

PITTSFIELD — Tim Kearns likes to sell beer. But he loves the Red Sox even more.

That's why the 31-year-old owner of O'Laughlin's Restaurant on Merrill Road has banned all Coors beer during the World Series.

Coors is from Colorado, and Colorado is home to the Rockies.

"There's no sense in supporting the enemy," Kearns said. "We feel we're a true Red Sox bar, so we're going the full distance."

Kearns said the spur-of-the-moment idea came to him early in the week. He unscrewed the Coors Light tap and emptied the cooler of all Coors bottles, including Coors, Coors Light and Blue Moon.

A hand-written sign on the mirror behind the bar alerts patrons: "Sorry folks, no Coors products until conclusion of W. Series."

He said his beer distributor really didn't mind that he wouldn't be selling the beer of the Molson Coors Brewing Co., the No. 3 brewery in sales in America behind Anheuser-Busch and SABMiller.

"We're pushing the Sam," said Kearns about the Boston-based Samuel Adams beer.

A few fans of the popular Coors Light have expressed a bit of contempt for the move, but all Kearns has to do is remind them — the Rockies play ball in Coors Field.

"We'd do anything to support the team," he said.

Other businesses that have special promotions during the World Series include Taco Bell. The nationwide chain offered a free taco if any player stole a base during the seven-game series.

Boston rookie outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who sparked the Red Sox during his midseason promotion, made sure that the fast-food chain's oven would need extra sparks on Tuesday. Ellsbury stole second in the fourth inning. The base swap assured that a free taco will be available for all customers from 2 to 5 p.m. at all Taco Bell stores on Tuesday.
