Local colleges: Williams sweeps in softball to stay perfect
CLERMONT, FLA. >> The Williams softball team improves to 8-0, sweeping Western Connecticut State in a doubleheader on Thursday. The Ephs won the first game 12-2, and the second game 8-3.
In the second game, Western Connecticut took a 3-0 lead into the fifth inning before Williams started its comeback. Jessica Kim plated one with a single into right field in the bottom of the inning. In the sixth, the Ephs broke the game open scoring seven runs. Alison Micha started the rally with an RBI single. Kim followed with a two-RBI double and Micha scored on a wild pitch. Lexi Curt plated two more with a double into left center. Mackenzie Murphy capped the rally with an RBI single, plating Curt. Alejandra Magana earned the win. She pitched six innings, allowing three runs and striking out five.
Kim led the way during the first victory as well. She had an RBI single in the second inning, putting the Ephs up 2-0. In the fourth, she cleared the bases with a double, increasing the lead to 5-0. The Ephs added seven more runs during the final two innings. Murphy earned the win. She went the distance, striking out three and scattering six hits.
The Ephs will play two games today. First they'll face St. Thomas of Minnesota at 9 a,m., followed by a matchup against Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 11 a.m.
WILLIAMS 16, BUFFALO STATE 8
CLERMONT, FLA. >> Williams used a 10-goal second half to earn a decisive win over Buffalo State. The Ephs took a one-goal lead into the second, and they scored eight unanswered goals, icing the game midway through the half. Emma Tenbarge led Williams with five goals. Miceala Dussel had three goals. Brett Bidstrup added four assists. Margaret Draper made four saves.
