Local golf: N.Y. duo leads Little Brown Jug

Saturday August 18, 2012

DALTON -- The team of Chad Stoffer and Mike McCaroll combined for an opening-round 6-under par 65 to take a two-shot lead in the Little Brown Jug tournament at Wahconah Country Club on Friday.

Stoffer and McCaroll, who are from Saratoga, N.Y., have been regulars in the popular best-ball event, but Wahconah head professional Jim Underdown said this is the first time they have been atop the leaderboard.

Two teams -- Longmeadow Country Club's A.J. Oleksak and Peter Alminas, Jay Singh and Chris Gilbert from Schenectady, N.Y., are tied for second place at 67.

Siena College golfers Justin Dietz and Don Denyse, among the pre-tournament favorites, are another shot back.

The Connecticut combination of Brent Deitz and Bill Tefft, who won the title two years ago and finished in a three-way tie for first in the rain-shortened 2011 event, settled for an even-par 71.

The leaders will tee off around 2 p.m. today. The final round in the 54-hole tournament is Sunday.
