Local golf: N.Y. duo wins at Pewter Cup
The New York team of Justin Deitz and Matt Canavan shot a final-round 3-under-par 69 on Sunday to earn a one-shot win in the Pewter Cup best-ball tournament at Berkshire Hills Country Club. Deitz and Canavan finished at 14-under 202 in the 54-hole tournament.
The team of Billy McDonald and John Kelly missed an eagle putt on the final hole that would have tied them with the winners. McDonald, of Connecticut, and Kelly, of East Longmeadow, put on a final-round charge, firing a 6-under 66.
Past champions Bill Tefft and Brent Dietz shot a 67 to finish in a tie for second with McDonald and Kelly.
Deitz, a former Siena College golf team member, and Canavan, who played at Skidmore College, took charge with a 7-under 65 on Saturday.
The Worthington Golf Club combination of James Ryan and Steve Magargal coasted home with a 1-under 71 to easily win the first flight title with a 204 total after shooting the round of the tournament, an 11-under 61, on Saturday behind a red-hot Ryan.
