Local roundup: High school tennis seedings announced; PHS boys lacrosse falls

Posted

The boys and girls high school tennis seedings were announced Tuesday, with four boys squads and three girls teams making the postseason.

All times, dates, locations and seeds are subject to change within 24 hours of the seedings' release.

On the girls side, Monument Mountain is the No. 4 seed in Western Mass. Division III while Lenox is fifth. Each squad gets a bye to the quarterfinal, where the two teams will meet in Great Barrington on Thursday.

The Millionaires and Spartans met in last season's sectional final, with Lenox holding off Monument 3-2. And although the two squads made it all the way to the final, the Spartans were the No. 5 seed and Lenox was No. 6. The two teams will likely have to pull similarly seeded upsets to last year if they are to make the final again.

"I'm not happy about facing Lenox," Monument coach Jeff Caligari said. "We're 9-1, they're 8-2. It's not right that two Berkshire county teams play in the first round."

Caligari pointed out that seven of the last eight sectional champions are from Berkshire County — Lenox four times, Monument twice and Lee once — despite not usually having a top-two seed in any of those years.

"We go and play the match, it's just a shame that it turned out that way," Caligari added. "I know how they do it, but I think the system's flawed.

"Lenox and Monument both have good teams, it's too bad we're playing each other now. But you've just got to go out and play the matches, that's the bottom line."

Lee is seeded seventh and is set to face No. 2 Frontier on the road on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

In Western Mass. boys D-III, defending sectional champion Mount Greylock earned the No. 2 seed. The Mounties will host seventh-seeded Lenox in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

"Since our last match we've been practicing hard and working on everyone's weaknesses," Greylock coach Stephen Bryant said. "Everyone's improved and we're ready for the tournament to start."

Other boys teams in Western Mass. D-III include Monument Mountain, which is seeded fourth, and Lee, which is eighth. The Spartans host No. 5 Sabis on Friday in the quarterfinal round while Lee travels to top-seeded Belchertown on Thursday.

NO. 7 WESTFIELD 19, NO. 10 PITTSFIELD 4

WESTFIELD >> The visiting Generals gave up 10 goals in the first quarter en route to an opening-round loss.

Westfield had nine different players score in the win, with Matt Bonsai scoring five and Anthony Sullivan scoring four.

"They [Westfield] are good," Pittsfield coach Scott Aitken said. "I think the speed of the game caught some of our guys off-guard a little bit.

"They went up quick on us, but our guys played hard and until the end. They didn't give up."

Kevin Quinto, Ryan Jacoby, Cam Giardina and Mitch Stechmann all scored in the loss, and De'Shane Johnson had a pair of assists while Mason Papirio had one. Nikolai Pixley stopped 13 shots.

Pittsfield finishes the year at 12-7.
