Local roundup: Mass. Amateur down to quarterfinal round


WILLIAMSTOWN — The run for Jake Shuman is over at the Massachusetts Golf Association Amateur Championship.

Shuman, the top seed in match play which began Wednesday morning, was bounced in the round of 16 by Jackson Lang. Lang, of Nashawtuc, topped the Bull Hill member 1-up at Taconic Golf Club on Wednesday.

Lang ended Shuman's tournament after Shuman shot a course record in match play on Monday. Shuman was not the only top seed who fell in the round of 16, as all four top seeds fell after winning their round of 32 match on Wednesday.

Matt Naumec of Great Horse is the highest seed still vying for the championship, with the No. 5 seed dispatching Jordan Burke (1-up) and Timothy Umphrey (2-and-1) in the respective rounds.

No. 2 Peter French was beaten by No. 15 Ryan Riley 7-and-6, No. 19 Thomas Henderson beat No. 3 Mark Turner 3-and-2, and No. 13 Alex Jeffers beat No. 4 Alex Jamieson 5-and-4.

No. 27 John Kelly of Twin Hills had the biggest underdog run on Wednesday, beating No. 6 Davis Chatfield in the first round and following it up with a win over Kevin Gately in the round of 16.

No. 7 Dan Cappucci topped Frank Vana Jr. in the round of 16 4-and-3, and No. 9 Brendan Hunter bested Christopher Gentle 2-and-1 to book the final quarterfinal spot.

Lang and Hunter will meet in the first tee time Thursday at 8 a.m., followed by Jeffers against Naumec, Riley against Cappucci and Henderson against Kelly at 8:30 a.m. The semifinal round will start at noon Thursday, and the 36-hole championship will begin on Friday at 8 a.m.

NORTH ADAMS >> Ben Olson pitched seven innings of two-hit shutout baseball, leading North Adams to a win over Upper Valley. Olson struck out six and walked two.

The SteepleCats scored once in the second and third innings, respectively. Easton Johnson's RBI single started the scoring. Daniel Holst scored the final run, reaching home on an Upper Valley error. Former Hoosac Valley star Tanner Bird earned his eighth save with a perfect ninth inning.
