Local roundup: McCann Tech girls soccer beats Franklin Tech in season opener


NORTH ADAMS — The McCann Tech (1-0. 1-0) girls soccer team used two second-half goals to earn a 2-1 win over Franklin Tech in its season opener Thursday.

Hannah Fuller found Aimee Dowling for McCann's first goal in the 63rd minute. Jordan Budaj followed with a goal of her own one minute later, converting on a pass from Julia Esoldi.

Alanza Quinones made eight saves in net for the Hornets.

NORTH ADAMS >> Kristen Borelli and Sydnie Sherman each scored twice for Taconic as the Braves picked up a five-goal victory to open the season.

Borelli scored the first two goals of the game before Sherman put one in with just three seconds remaining in the first half, giving Taconic (1-0, 1-0 Berkshire South) a 3-0 halftime advantage. Mariah Pannesco added to Taconic's lead with under 14 minutes remaining before Sherman capped the scoring with 56 seconds remaining.

"Taconic was moving the ball around really good and they capitalized on our younger girls' inexperience at a varsity level," Drury coach Maryjane Rumbolt said in an email.

Drury (0-1, 0-1) had seven total shots while Taconic registered nine.

LEE >> The Berkshire South cross-country teams met at Lee for the season's opening meet on Wednesday, and Drury's Connor Meehan and Wahconah's Gabby Orlando walked away as overall winners.

Meehan won the boys race in 11 minutes, 31 seconds. Wahconah's Dan Brainerd finished second in 12:23. The top 5 was rounded out by Chris Campos (Wahconah), Sebastian Dowd-Smith (Lee) and Grayson Duval (Mount Everett).

Orlando took first place over her sister, Danielle, 13:52 to 13:59. Hoosac's Jamie Barthe was third, followed by Wahconah's Katerina Bruce and Hoosac's Paige Barrow.

In team results, The Wahconah boys beat Mount Everett (24-35) and Lee (22-37), while Hoosac beat Drury 15-50 — Drury does not field a full team — and Mount Everett bested Lee 25-30.

For the girls, Wahconah beat Mount Everett (15-49) and Lee (15-48), while Hoosac beat Drury 23-33 and Lee beat Mount Everett 22-37.

CLINTON, N.Y. >> The defending Division III national champions got its season off to a good start with a shutout victory over Hamilton.

Williams (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC) took a 1-0 lead into the half after Alison Lu scored unassisted just over 31 minutes into the game. Kristi Kirshe scored just under a half hour later to double the lead before Lu again scored unassisted in the 67th minute.

Natalie Turner-Wyatt and Natasha Albaneze had assists for Williams while Olivia Barnhill recorded six saves en route to a shutout. Emily Dumont registered sevens saves for Hamilton (0-1, 0-1).
