Local roundup: Mount Greylock football routs Mahar in season opener
ORANGE >> The Mount Greylock football team got its season started on the right foot Friday, taking down Mahar 35-8 on the road.
Pat Storie powered the offense with a pair of touchdown runs in the first half. Michael Wellspeak connected for two touchdown throws, hitting Brandon Condon at the start of the second quarter before hitting Sean McCormack for a score later in the stanza.
Greylock (1-0) capped its scoring in the third quarter when Cal Messina recovered a fumble and took it to the barn. Mahar scored its lone touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
"Michael Wellspeak played great, he probably threw for over 150 yards," Greylock coach Andrew Agostini said. "Sean was close to 100 yards receiving, the defense played really well.
Agostini said the win was a solid start for the program, although even in a blowout he recognized things that have to get fixed.
"We had a bunch of penalties and there is stuff to fix and things we are getting better at," Agostini said, "but it's great to start the season out like this."
PALMER 47, MONUMENT MOUNTAIN 22
PALMER >> Shamall Schoonmaker rushed for over 100 yards and a touchdown for Monument Mountain, but the Spartans fell in their opener.
Trailing 6-0, fullback John Field scored a 1-yard touchdown for Monument (0-1) and Caleb Carlson hit Ben Wyatt for the two-point conversion to give Monument an 8-6 lead. After another Palmer score, Nolan Dupont scored for the Spartans and Schoonmaker added the two for a 16-13 Monument advantage.
After the Panthers led 26-16 at halftime, Schoonmaker scored on a touchdown run to pull Monument with 26-22 in the third. But it wasn't enough for the Spartans.
"We weren't able to catch up," Monument coach Chris D'Aniello said. "We had some costly mistakes in our own territory that gave them the ball, and in our territory that gave them the ball."
MONUMENT MOUNTAIN 1, MOUNT GREYLOCK 0
GREAT BARRINGTON >> Zufan Bazzano's goal in the 18th minute was enough for Monument Mountain in its home opener.
The goal was assisted by Crista Cardillo.
"Our home opener, happy with the result," Monument coach Jess Platt wrote in an email. "But still early in the season — we have a lot of work to do."
The Spartans are 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the Berkshire North. The Mounties are 1-1, 0-1.
Monument will host Southwick today at 1 p.m.

SHEFFIELD >> Gwendolyn Carpenter scored twice and added two assists for Mount Everett in its four-goal victory.
Madeline VonRuden got the Eagles (2-0, 1-0 Berkshire South) off to a fast start with a goal in the first minute. Sarah Beckwith and Logan Rathbun also scored for Mount Everett.
For Drury (0-2, 0-2), Miranda Wissman scored while goalie Allison Brassard recorded 11 saves.

Taconic jumped out to a 3-1 lead at halftime.

Marley Missenbaum scored in the 34th minute for Monson while Shannon Jalbert added another in the 42nd minute. Claudia Bresett got a goal back for the Hurricanes (0-1) in the 56th minute, but Monson held on.
"This was a great game against a very good team," Hoosac Valley coach Kathy Budaj wrote in an email. "Both teams had moments of great play."
Olivia Bresett had an assist for Hoosac while goalie Kailynne Frederick registered eight saves.

NEW LEBANON, N.Y. >> Mount Everett broke through with three goals in the second half en route to a championship game berth at the New Lebanon Tourney.
Ellis Waldman scored in the 54th minute for Mount Everett (2-0) while Cavan Brady scored one minute later to double the lead. Brendan Dempsey closed the scoring with nine minutes remaining while Patrick Silk had four saves in a shutout effort for the Eagles.
"We kind of took advantage of opportunities that we didn't convert on in the first half," Mount Everett coach Josh King said.
Mount Everett will play either Taconic Hills or New Lebanon in the championship today at 7 p.m.

For Athol, Hope Parker registered 15 digs to go along with eight kills.
AMHERST 3, MOUNT GREYLOCK 1
WILLIAMSTOWN >> The Mount Greylock volleyball team fell in a home match against Amherst on Friday night.
Amherst took the match with set scores of 25-21, 25-16, 25-27 and 25-16.
Jenna Benzinger led the Mounties with 10 kills and four blocks in the loss. Dagny Albano was busy, as well, recording 21 assists. Marley Buffis chipped in with 15 digs, and Serena Chow had seven kills for Greylock (1-1).
For Amherst, Clair Basler-Chang had 15 kills, two assists and 21 digs, while Periya Yoth had 17 digs.
