Local roundup: Pittsfield 14s win regional opener
WESTFIELD >> The Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14-year old All-Stars are two wins away from the World Series after defeating the Westfield B team 8-2 on Friday.
Jett Steinman had a strong all-around game, striking out five to earn the win. He added two hits and three RBI as well.
Steinman, Lucien Lameraux, Jayden Cross and Christian Womble all had RBI hits in the four-run second.
Pittsfield returns to action at home on Sunday against Nipmuc at 2 p.m.
UPPER VALLEY 10, NORTH ADAMS 3
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VT >> Upper Valley's offense carried it to a commanding win over North Adams.
The Nighthawks scored four runs in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively. The SteepleCats scored two runs in the eighth, but they could not complete the comeback.
Bill Maier earned the win, pitching eight innings while scattering five hits and three runs. Mount Greylock graduate Robby Buffis took the loss. He allowed four runs in three and one-third innings.
The 'Cats return to action Sunday in the road against Winnipesaukee at 6:05 p.m.
MITSUYAMA UP FOR AWARD
WILLIAMSTOWN >> Williams soccer player Mai Mitsuyama emerged from a field of 517 nominees to become one of just three finalists for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
Of the 517 nominees, 231 are Division I athletes, 117 are Division II and 169 are Division III.
Mitsuyama started 86 games during her career at Williams. She's a three-time All-NESCAC honoree, three-time academic All-NESCAC honoree, three-time first team NSCAA All-New England, three-time first team ECAC All-New England and a two-time HSCAA first team All-American.
TWO BERKSHIRE COUNTY WRESTLERS COMPETING AT BAY STATE GAMES
BOSTON >> Three members of the Berkshire Community College club wrestling team are taking part in the Bay State Summer Games. The competition started Friday and runs through today. Mount Greylock graduate C.J. Lillie will wrestle at 162-pound class. Monument Mountain graduate Sebastian Zapata will also wrestle at 162. Shawn Green will wrestle at the 170.
Any athlete that earns a bronze, silver or gold will qualify for the 2017 State Games of America in Grand Rapids, Mich.
