Local roundup: Pittsfield 15s win again in Babe Ruth pool play
LYNN >> The Pittsfield Babe Ruth 15-year-old All-Stars defeated Maine 13-1 to improve to 2-0 in pool play at the New England Regional Tournament.
Joe Cracolici went 3 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored for Pittsfield while Joe Woronick was 2 for 2 with three runs scored and two RBI.
In the five-inning, mercy-rule shortened game, Hunter Potash pitched the first three innings, allowing no hits and no runs while striking out four and walking two. He earned the win. Hayden Harrington came on in relief and struck out two in two innings, allowing one run.
Other notable offensive outputs for Pittsfield came from Carter Matthews (2 for 2, RBI, run, two walks), Ian Benoit (1 for 2, two RBI, two runs, walk) and John Halse (two RBI, walk).
Pittsfield plays Eastern Mass. at 1 p.m. today in Lynn in the final game of pool play. Pittsfield has outscored its opponents 24-4 over its first two games.
BABE RUTH 13'S
ROCHESTER, N.H. >> The Pittsfield Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars could not complete their opening game of the New England Regional due to rain. The teams will reconvene today at 9 a.m. Pittsfield has the bases loaded and two out, leading 7-2 over Eastern Massachusetts in the fourth inning.
NORWOOD >> The Pittsfield Post 68 American Legion team won its opening round game of the Massachusetts Department Championship Tournament 11-8 over Wareham on Saturday at Peter Wall Field. Pittsfield advances to face Milton today at 4:30.
Pittsfield's two big scoring bursts provided enough cushion to hold off Wareham, batting around in the third and fourth innings, respectively. Matt Schneider started the scoring with a two-run double in the third. Wareham errors led to three more Post 68 runs. In the fifth, Matt Koperniak hit a two-run double. Simon Nassif and Shane Tierney added RBI singles as well.
Patrick Colvin had three hits. Koperniak had three RBI.
Izaiya Mestre got the start for Pittsfield, but lasted only four innings. Sam Fick entered in relief, allowing inherited runners to score, but stopped the bleeding at two runs allowed. He's credited with the win. Jake Flynn pitched the final inning and one-third for the save.
