Local roundup: Pittsfield National picks up win in 11-12 Little League


PITTSFIELD — The Pittsfield National 11-12 All-Stars ran the gauntlet through the loser's bracket, advancing to the District I final with a 7-6 win over Great Barrington in seven innings.

The win sets up a championship match against Pittsfield American tonight at 5:30 p.m. at Clapp Park. National will need to beat American twice to win the title.

In a back-and-forth game, Pittsfield National plated the go-ahead run on Sam Sherman's go-ahead walk in the top of the seventh.

Great Barrington threatened in the bottom half of the inning after Jonathan Monahan issued a leadoff walk. But Monahan regrouped, striking out the next batter, forcing a ground out and ended the game with a strikeout. He was credited with the win.

Jackson Smith and Nick Pectal did all the heavy lifting for Great Barrington. The duo each had two home runs and three RBI. Smith had a two-run home run in the fourth inning, and Pectal had a two-run homer in the sixth. Thew duo added solo homer in the sixth, tying the game at 6-6.

Mike Zwinglestein's two-run home run in the fifth put National up 6-4. Sherman went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Nick Hall added a two-RBI single.


NORTH ADAMS >> The North Adams SteepleCats lost to the Newport Gulls 14-1.

Daniel Holst, Dustin Shirley and Easton Johnson each had hits for North Adams.

For Newport, Troy Dixon went 5 for 6 with three RBI and two runs while Chris Chatfield was 3 for 4 with a home run, four RBI and four runs.

Connor Kaiser had four hits and two RBI for the Gulls.

Hunter Schryver pitched seven innings of two-hit ball for Newport, striking out seven and walking one while allowing no earned runs.

North Adams is back in action today at home against the Upper Valley Nighthawks at 6:30 p.m.


DALTON >> Billy Yurko won the Allied Senior Championship at the Wahconah Country Club on Monday.

Yurko, playing out of the Wahconah Country Club, shot a 1-under 70. He birdied the second, fourth, seventh and 18th holes. He bogeyed his final hole, but finished with a two-shot lead over Andy Congdon (Wyantenuck).

Rich Rowe (Wahconah CC) finished third with a 74. Bill Palko (Wahconah CC) finished fourth with a 75. Jeff Polcci (Taconic CC), Ed Chandler (Cranwell) and Ray Underwood (Torrington) tied for fifth with 76s.
