Local roundup: Pittsfield Post 68 sweeps doubleheader


SPRINGFIELD >> Pittsfield Post 68 picked up a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, improving to 13-2 overall.

Post 68 defeated East Springfield 15-3 and followed with a 9-5 win over Easthampton. Pittsfield has an 11-2 record in Western Mass.

In the win over East Springfield, Matt Koperniak finished 2 for 2 with six RBI. He tripled in the first inning and connected on a bases-clearing single in the second. He added a sacrifice fly in the third.

Sam Fick doubled and drove in two for Post 68 while Chad Shade contributed two hits and scored twice. Brett Murphy and Shane Tierney each added two hits as well, with Murphy registering an RBI and Tierney scoring twice.

In the win, Pittsfield scored three in the first, five in the second, three in third, two in the fifth and two in the sixth. Izaiya Mestre pitched the first two innings, Michael Hurley pitched the next two and Ross Omelenchuck closed it out with one inning pitched.

Against Easthamtpon, Post 68 scored one in the first, one in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth. Easthampton scored all five of its runs in the fourth.

Koperniak was 3 for 3 with two RBI and a double. Matt Schneider went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI while Shade was 2 for 3 with three RBI.

Fick started and went 3+ innings for Pittsfield while Patrick Colvin relieved him and finished out the game, earning the win.


LANESBORO >> In an elimination game held Saturday evening at Laston Memorial Park, Southern Berkshire stayed alive in the 12U Cal Ripken state tournament with a 6-5 win over Greenfield.

Roberto Barron hit a solo home run in the fifth to give Southern Berkshire the lead for good. Danny Munch pitched three innings, allowing two runs. He relieved Barron, who struck out seven and allowed three runs.

Colin Durkin had two hits and an RBI while scoring a run for Southern Berkshire.

In the other game, Narragansett defeated Westminster 11-1 in an elimination game.

Southern Berkshire and Narragansett will face off in another elimination game today at 10 a.m. A winner's bracket game between Lanesboro and Turners Falls will begin at 1 p.m., with the loser of that playing an elimination game against the winner of the morning game at 4 p.m. for a spot in the championship.


WESTMINSTER >> In the opening game of the 10U Cal Ripken state tournament on Friday, the Berkshire All-Stars defeated Northbridge 8-0.

Max Shepardson pitched four strong innings for Berkshire while Griffin McElroy helped combine for a three-hitter. The Berkshire offense was led by Ethan Fairfield, who had two hits and three RBI.

Shepardson had two hits as the offense registered nine hits and drew five walks total.

In game two on Saturday, Berkshire beat Narragansett 14-5.

Tyler Carlson started and pitched three innings while Michael Butler and Damenacoe Conway pitched in relief, combining for five hits against.

Michael Butler was 3 for 3 with three RBI for Berkshire while Shepardson went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBI.

Mason Abdalla had two hits for Berkshire.

Berkshire will play Ayer/Shirley at 11:30 a.m. today with the playoffs set for 4:30 p.m.
