Local roundup: Post 68 picks up another win


NORWOOD — Pittsfield Post 68 won its second game in a row to open the American Legion Massachusetts state tournament on Sunday.

Post 68 defeated Milton 20-9 to advance as one of two remaining unbeaten teams in the double-elimination bracket. Pittsfield will play either Shrewsbury or Norwood at 7:30 tonight.

For Post 68, Matt Koperniak had two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored while Mike Downer had two hits, two RBI and two runs. Chad Shade was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI while Abdiel Cotto-Hernandez went 2 for 4 with three RBI and two runs.

Other notable offensive outputs for Pittsfield included Brett Murphy (3 for 3 off bench), Patrick Colvin (2 for 5 with two RBI, two runs) and Izaiya Mestre (four runs).

Ethan Forfa picked up the win for Post 68, as he lasted 4 2/3 innings of the eight-inning, mercy-rule shortened game. Ross Omelenchuck (1 1/3 innings), Jake Flynn (1 inning) and Colvin (1 inning) closed it out.




LYNN >> Pittsfield fell to Eastern Mass. 4-0 in the final game of pool play in the Babe Ruth 15-year-old Regional tournament, but it didn't keep the Berkshire County squad from earning the top seed in the National Division.

Pittsfield will play North Providence-Smithfield, R.I. in the semifinal round today at 2 p.m. with a berth in the final on the line.

In the loss to Eastern Mass., Joe Traversa and Cedric Rose each had two hits for Pittsfield. Carter Matthews and Paul Wales split the pitching duties.


ROCHESTER, N.H. >> In a game that had to be continued on Sunday due to weather suspension from the night before, Pittsfield closed out a 10-6 victory over Taunton to move 1-0 in pool play at the Babe Ruth 13-year-old Regional tournament.

Anton Lazits closed out the win with 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh.

Jake Risley went 4 for 4 with two doubles for Pittsfield while Christian Marchbanks was 2 for 4 with two RBI. Caden Frazier pitched three innings before Haywood Eurquhart took over and then Lazits.

Lazits went 2 for 4 with an RBI as well.

Pittsfield returns to action this morning at 10 against Augusta, Maine.


WORCESTER >> The Pittsfield Suns lost on the road against the Worcester Bravehearts 5-3 as Nick Rybarczyk hit a two-run, walk-off home run to lift Worcester to victory.

Justin Morhardt, Colin Ridley and Conor Moriarty each had two hits for Pittsfield.

After trailing 3-0, Pittsfield scored twice in the eighth and once in the ninth to tie it before Worcester won the game on the walkoff.

Pittsfield returns to action Tuesday when it faces Worcester at Wahconah Park at 7 p.m.
