Local sports roundup: Mount Greylock's Smith finishes seventh at Queensbury Invitational
QUEENSBURY, N.Y. >> The Mount Greylock cross-country teams traveled to Queensbury, N.Y. on Saturday for the Queensbury Invitational, and sophomore Margo Smith placed seventh overall in the Division I race, completing the five-kilometer course in 19 minutes, 21 seconds.
Evan Arthur was the top male Mountie finisher, finishing 15th overall in a time of 16:36.6.
Champlain Valley Union (VT) swept the top spots in both races, with Tyler Marshall (15:55.19) and Sophia Gorman (18:50.1) taking the top spots.
The Mount Greylock boys entered as a scoring team, and placed eighth overall in the 16-team D-I field with 222 points. Saratoga Springs took first with 67 points.
Sam Culver (49th), Owen brandriss (51st), Cameron Castonguay (52) and Josh Cheung (55th) rounded out the scoring five for Greylock.
For the girls, Niku Darafshi (46th), Emily Lescarbeau (49th) and Sydney Gurek (65th) also ran.
THE GUNNERY 2, MISS HALL'S 1
PITTSFIELD >> Miss Hall's dropped its home opener on Saturday behind a pair of goals from Gunnery in the first 20 minutes.
The Hurricanes outshot Gunnery by a 2-1 ratio in the loss.
WILLIAMS WOMEN'S SOCCER
WILLIAMSTOWN >> The top-ranked Williams women needed a second-half goal to remain perfect and beat Colby 1-0.
Freshman Sarah Kelly scored her first career goal at 63:57 to break a scoreless tie. Williams (4-0-0, 3-0-0 in NESCAC) had a 20-3 shot advantage and had 13 corner kicks to one for Colby (2-2-0, 0-2-0).
Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Barnhill did not make a save in earning the shutout. She has a shutout streak of 192 minutes, 14 seconds.
WILLIAMS MEN'S SOCCER
WILLIAMSTOWN >> The Ephs came into the game as the No. 4 team in the New England region. They had the better of play, but needed a goal by Mark Sisco-Tolomeo with 12 minutes left to break a tie and get a 2-1 win against Colby.
"League results aren't easy to come by in the NESCAC, so it was important that we broke through," Williams coach Erin Sullivan said.
The Ephs (3-1, 2-0) led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by freshman Damien Goss. It was Goss' first college goal. Colby fell to 1-2-1, 0-1-1.
MCLA WOMEN'S SOCCER
NORTH ADAMS >> At Shewcraft Field, MCLA goalkeeper Megan Richardson was downright heroic as the Trailblazers (1-2-2, 0-0-1 in MASCAC) and Bridgewater State (1-2-2, 0-0-1) battled to a scoreless tie in the conference opener for both teams.
Bridgewater outshot MCLA 27-2, and had 10 corner kicks to none for the Trailblazers. Richardson had 13 saves, including seven in the second half. Bridgewater goalie Lauren DeSouza did not make a save.
WILLIAMS FIELD HOCKEY
WILLIAMSTOWN >> Visiting Colby (2-2, 1-1) scored a pair of second-half goals to beat Williams 2-1.
The Ephs (2-2, 1-1) scored on Hannah Goodrick's penalty stroke at 37:23. Colby answered with goals by Tori Brown and Kallie Hutchinson.
Emily Buckman had 11 saves for Colby and Margaret Draper had four for Williams.
High School Golf
WAHCONAH 173, MOUNT GREYLOCK 176 (FRIDAY)
MOUNT GREYLOCK >> The Wahconah golf team edged Mount Greylock by three strokes on Friday at Waubeeka Golf Links.
Jon Dos Santos was the medalist on the day, shooting a 1-over 37 on the front nine.
Mount Greylock's Kyle Alvarez was the only other golfer to shoot a sub-40, recording a 39.
