Lone North Street restaurant to cafe dining at Third Thursday in July

PITTSFIELD >> A lone downtown restaurant is taking advantage the opportunity to offer cafe dining to during July's Third Thursday festivities.

Y Not Bar and Lounge plans to serve tacos and beer to seated customers on the sidewalk of its location at the corner of North and Bradford streets from 5 - 8 p.m. July 21. Those are the regular hours for the city's block party from May to September.

The city's Licensing Board on Monday unanimously approved a one-day license for Y Not Bar's temporary outdoor cafe. The five-member panel agreed at its May meeting to accept applications for any restaurant within the pedestrian-friendly Third Thursday venue wanting to give the outside dining a try.

The city had sent emails to eateries located in the blocked-off area of North Street between Park Square and Maplewood Avenue encouraging them to consider setting up a cafe for Third Thursday.

The cafe dining fits in well with the July theme of food, according to Jen Glockner, director of the Pittsfield Office of Cultural Development.

"We really want to try and get restaurants out on the street for Third Thursday," she told the board.

While the Third Thursday cafe doesn't technically fall under the city's sidewalk cafe ordinance, Y Not Bar and Lounge must still cordon off the outdoor seating to ensure alcohol consumption occurs within a confined area.

"The area will be monitored and nothing will leave the area," Glockner said.

Y Not bar owner Yuki Cohen said between five and 10 tables will be set up, but the board wanted more details.

"Those were the kind of specifics we were hoping for," said board member Dana Doyle. "We wanted to control the flow of alcohol through that area."

As a condition of seeking the cafe permit for Third Thursday, a representative from the applicant had to explain to the board their cafe setup.

The board took no action on J. Allen's Clubhouse Grille application for a temporary cafe as no one from the restaurant at 41 North St. attended the board meeting.
