Man gets 2 more years for having makeshift weapon
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A Massachusetts man previously sentenced to nearly 22 years on federal drug and gun charges has gotten two additional years for possessing a makeshift weapon.
The U.S. attorney’s office said 36-year-old Ernesto Monell of Taunton was sentenced this week after being convicted in May of being in possession of the contraband at the Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls.
Prosecutors said correctional officers saw Monell attacking other detainees a year ago using a homemade shank. Officers used chemical spray to bring the situation under control.
Four days after being convicted on the contraband charge, Monell was sentenced in Boston to 262 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of cocaine base with the intent to distribute. He was arrested in Fall River in 2012.
