Man struck, killed by train in Pittsfield

Wednesday February 29, 2012

PITTSFIELD -- City police are investigating a train-pedestrian accident Tuesday evening that killed a man on downtown railroad tracks.

Around 7:10 p.m., a CSX locomotive pulling another train engine struck an unidentified male who apparently was walking on the tracks along Depot Street, according to police. The impact pinned the victim underneath the first locomotive.

Authorities were still at the scene at press time trying to determine why the fatal accident occurred, several hundred yards behind Baba Louie's restaurant. The tracks are cordoned off by a chain-link fence, except for an ungated entrance to allow construction workers access to the tracks. It's unclear if that's where the victim entered onto the rails.

Depot Street from McKay Street to the west end of the parking lot along Depot was closed to traffic while police conducted their investigation.
