BECKET -- A local man who allegedly attacked a family member before leading police on a high speed chase last weekend has been apprehended in Westfield, law enforcement authorities said.

State police arrested Gary A. Weiner at a motel in Westfield on Wednesday evening. Weiner was taken into custody willingly.

He is facing 10 charges, including attempted kidnapping, assault and battery, two counts of leaving the scene of a property damage accident, and failure to stop for a police officer. Additional charges may be filed, according to Becket Police.

Weiner would have been arraigned in Southern Berk shire District Court on Thurs day, but was taken to Noble Hospital in Westfield after complaining of medical issues, court officials said.

A hospital spokeswoman said Weiner had been admitted to Noble for treatment, but de clined to provide a condition report.

It is unclear when Weiner will return to the Berkshires to be arraigned, court officials said.

Weiner fled from police on the night of Sept. 14 after officers responded to a report that he had attacked a family member.

He fled in his pickup reaching speeds of 80 mph with police in pursuit. After crashing the pickup, Weiner fled on foot until he found a nearby vehicle that he used to continue his escape before crashing again. He then continued to flee on foot. Weiner told police that he made his way to a pay phone and called a cab that took him to Westfield.

Police conducted a widespread search that lasted through all of last weekend.
