MCLA men's soccer earns another shutout win in Vermont
NORWICH, Vt. -- The MCLA men's soccer team earned its second shutout in two days, blanking Johnson State 2-0 on Saturday to start its season with consecutive victories in the Norwich Cadet Classic.
The Trailblazers routed Green Mountain College 5-0 on Friday. MCLA lost the tiebreaker to host Norwich for the overall title in the round-robin tournament.
Romeo Grey got MCLA on the board on Saturday when he scored his second goal in two days in the 30th minute off an assist from Tyler Callahan. Anthony Basile gave the Trailblazers a cushion in the 30th minute with Kwadwo Kusi earning an assist.
Keeper Matt Robinson earned his second straight shutout by stopping three shots.
The Trailblazers dominated Green Mountain in the tournament opener, outshooting their foes 32-6. Tyler Vona, Basile, Kusi, Grey, and Chris Shea scored goals for MCLA.
Kusi, Basile, Grey and Anthony Bonacio made the all-tournament team. Bonacio was named the defensive MVP.
MCLA is off until next weekend's CIAO Classic. They will play Curry College at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
NORTH ADAMS -- Jackie Dwyer scored a goal off a corner kick in the 81st minute as the MCLA women's soccer team salvaged a season-opening tie against Regis College at Shewcraft Field.
The Pride struck early in the game, scoring on a goal by Joanna Rosa, who gained control of the ball at the top of the box and lofted a shot over MCLA keeper Katy Daly to make it 1-0 in the fifth minute.
The Trailblazers started to wear down the Pride in the second half, creating numerous scoring opportunities but coming up empty until Dwyer's goal.
After MCLA forced a corner kick, freshman and Hoosac Valley product Courtney Hayer lofted a perfect ball into the box. Regis attempted to clear it, but instead the ball found the foot of Dwyer, who easily slipped a shot past Rachel Gagnon.
Neither team came close to scoring during the rest of regulation and there were only five total shots during the overtime periods.
Gagnon finished with seven saves for Regis and Daly had four for MCLA.
MCLA will host Albertus Magnus at 1 p.m. on Monday.
The Traiblazers opened their season with an 8-1 victory over Becker College at the Zava ttaro Athletics complex.
Pittsfield product Emily Deaso and Mount Greylock product Mariza Sfakianaki earned an 8-2 win in doubles before both earned straight set victories in singles. Rebecca Waterhouse and Sarah Miku towicz also earned two points each in the one-sided win.
Volleyball team wins twice
CASTLETON, Vt. -- The Trailblazers swept a season-opening tri-match, beating Green Mountain 3-0 and Castleton State 3-0. Samantha Anderson had seven kills in the 25-4, 25-10, 25-11 win over Green Mountain. Maggie Allen led the way with 13 kills as MCLA beat Castleton State 25-11, 25-14, 13-25, 25-17.
