MCLA wins on baseball diamond


WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- An offensive explosion led the MCLA baseball team to 13-8 over Rhode Island College on Sunday.

MCLA led by one after four innings before scoring 11 runs in innings five and six to open up the lead.

Garrett Alibozek started the scoring with an RBI single to right. Cody Weaver bunted to load the bases later in the inning, and after an RBI single and a sacrifice fly, Mike Sullivan’s two-run RBI capped the six-run inning.

The Trailblazers loaded the bases again in the sixth, and Chase Preite picked up his third and fourth RBI of the day with an double to left center, giving MCLA a 13-1 lead.

MCLA softball splits

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- The MCLA softball team split a doubleheader Sunday losing to Edgewood College 4-2 in the first game, and beating Rockford 5-0 in the second.

Edgewood held off a late rally by the Trailblazers in the first game of the doubleheader. Shelbi Clary scored on an error by the Edgewood shortstop in the fifth inning to put MCLA on the board.

In the sixth inning, Amanda Meczywor scored from third as Sam Barbarotta was caught stealing at second, cutting Edgewood’s lead to two, but MCLA would not score again.

In the second game, Rachel Quackenbush earned her second win of the second by throwing seven innings of shutout ball. She allowed four hits and struck out 15.
