Meet your neighbors at DownStreet Art kick-off

NORTH ADAMS — Home to one of the largest contemporary art institutions in the world, it comes as no surprise that North Adams markets itself as a haven for artists.

On Thursday, the ninth annual DownStreet Art festival series kicks off with a theme of "Meet Your Neighbors," celebrating and featuring artists who live within a 20-mile radius of the city.

The event, organized by the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and Berkshire Cultural Resource Center, is held in downtown North Adams from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with additional dates scheduled for July 28, Aug. 25 and Sept. 29.

"DownStreet Art's theme 'Meet Your Neighbors' spotlights not only the amazing institutional resources available, but also the talented artists living and working alongside us in North Adams and the surrounding community," said Jennifer Crowell, director of MCLA's Berkshire Cultural Resource Center, in a statement.

DownStreet Art includes a range of activities including new exhibitions at galleries throughout the city, but also live theatrical and musical performances, live podcasting and a special food market featuring local vendors.

This year also will feature the opening of four "creative incubator" spaces, which will feature a team of artists and student interns at local pop-up galleries.

The night also will include an announcement of the artists who perform at the Levitt Amp concert series in Colegrove Park, a grant-funded weekly concert series scheduled to begin later this year.
