Mitt's elitism on full display
Mitt Romney’s explanation for his loss is revealing. What it reveals may not be exactly what he had in mind.
He belittles Social Security, Medicare, immigration, even support for education and especially universal health care as "gifts" from Democrats to minorities and women and men who earn between $25,000 and $35,000 a year. It is clear that he has no respect for these programs or these Americans.
America has always struggled with whether to be a full democracy or a republic for the elite with the rest of us here to do the dirty work. Romney’s language makes clear, perhaps unintentionally, which way his heart and his mind would lead and makes even clearer why he lost. His language also makes clear why America will lose as long as we allow such elitist thinking to divide us and such divisive thinking to control any part of the government.
Lincoln’s words at Gettys burg, "This government of the people, by the people and for the people," clearly meant, not of the elite, by the elite and for the elite, but of, by, and for all the people.
