Mohegan Sun casino proposal put to test in Revere
REVERE, Mass. (AP) - Voters in Revere are deciding whether to welcome a resort casino to the city.
Tuesday's referendum will determine whether Mohegan Sun can move forward with its $1.3 billion proposal on land owned by Suffolk Downs.
A yes vote would allow Mohegan Sun to compete with Wynn Resorts for the sole eastern Massachusetts resort casino. A no vote would kill the plan.
Supporters, including Mayor Dan Rizzo, point to a host community agreement with Mohegan Sun that promises jobs and millions of dollars in revenue for Revere. But opponents, including religious leaders, say a casino would bring traffic, crime and other social ills to the city.
This is the second casino vote in Revere in just over three months. Voters approved an earlier proposal at Suffolk Downs, but East Boston rejected that plan.
