Monday's soccer: Pittsfield boys prevail


PITTSFIELD -- Claudio Velez scored a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of the game to vault the Pittsfield High School boys soccer team over Easthampton 5-2 in an independent contest Monday.

"We've never played them before, but any team from the Valley you have to respect," said Pittsfield coach Andrew Antil. "Claudio got us off to a good start, and we took a nice lead at halftime."

PHS (2-0-1) led 5-1 at the half.

LUDLOW -- The Lions scored a goal in each half to earn this win over the Braves.

"They have a very deep team, and I think they wore us down," said Braves coach Mark Wasnewsky. "They have a lot of quality players on the bench and both their goals came late in each half. Overall, I'm pleased with our play."

LENOX -- A four-goal explosion early in the second half elevated the Mounties over the Millionaires.

Alessandra Arace had a hat trick for the Millionaires.

"I thought we were a little flat in the first half, although we scored the only goal," said Lenox coach Kyle Zinchuk. "But in the first part of the second half, we really went flat, and Greylock came at us, four goals in 15 minutes."

CHESHIRE -- The Braves never led, but pulled even each time they fell back. Lisa Laughnane's goal tied the game at 1, and Taconic's Lauren Curry scored the game's final goal in the second half.

"It was our first time playing a full 80 minutes," Taconic coach John Flynn said. "We know they're a good team, and we played with them, so we're happy."

Flynn added that Taconic (2-2-1) goalie Brooke Mangiardi played her best game of the season so far.

"[Brooke] really came out of her shell today," he said.

No Hoosac Valley information was available.

SHEFFIELD -- Maura Robitaille scored a pair of goals to lead the Eagles, now 3-1-1.

"We got some really solid minutes from everyone today," said Everett coach Jess Tomich. "We possessed really well the whole game."
