Money well spent countering GOP
I started working on my taxes recently. Going through those photocopy-filled pages of canceled checks I found a few I had forgotten about. The first was a $35 contribution to Elizabeth Warren's Senate campaign. I remember the day I sent this off last summer after watching a video of a bunch of goons at one of her rallies giving tomahawk-chopping motions and chanting racist comments disparaging her American Indian ancestry.
Another was to "Obama For America." That one was sent off after John Sununu called our president "lazy" -- he stopped just short of adding "shiftless." More followed, all small amounts, but all in response to some stupid or racist thing said by Republicans. This was what I could do instead of ranting. Looking back, this was money well spent. My money had trumped all the millions spent by the Koch Brothers and Sheldon Adelson.
Now we see powerful groups aligning against our president again as he moves against the status quo of madness that is this country's policy concerning guns. Don't get me wrong, I am not against gun ownership. We just cannot let it be so easy for cowardly murderers to mow down or fellow citizens and friends.
So what can we do? Weep and moan? No, call and send some money to support the common sense measures being advanced by our president. The Brady campaign will make good use of your money. There are others as well.
I hope to be able to smile at tax time again next year at money well spent. KERRY DOUGLAS
