'Monster Mash' at Pittsfield's Third Thursday is a graveyard smash
There was no shortage of food, music, dancing and merchandise filling North Street on Thursday to distract parents so kids could get down to the serious business of candy accumulation.
And by all accounts, that's precisely what they did.

Those who manned the stations along the street said they gave away hundreds of pieces of candy during the October edition of Third Thursday. The theme this year was "Monster Mash."
The recipients: Pint-sized ninjas, Spider-Men, princesses and fairies -- even a little UPS man.
Robyn Moore of Persnickety Toys said she handed out goodies "nonstop" inside Crawford Square throughout the event. Persnickety, Jess et Mia, Big Head Books, Pateez Boutique and Kinderhook Group Real Estate bought the treats.
"We pooled together our resources and went through like 700 pieces," Moore said.
Kyren Hanson, 6, told of his plans to make out like a bandit this year.
"We get to trick-or-treat here, at the (Berkshire) Mall (on Oct. 27) and on Halloween," he said.

Kyren, his sister 8-year-old sister, Tessa, and some other young friends had recently returned from a spooky booth put together by Jiminy Peak. The mountain resort was promoting its ongoing "13 Nights" Halloween show scheduled through the month.
Inside the tent at that booth? A killer clown and a rather disturbing bald-headed fellow wearing mad doctor garb.
"For the record, out of all these kids, the one girl (Tessa) was the one to go in first," said the Hansons' mother, Linsi.
"Don't judge us," replied Isiah Feliciano, 9, another in the group.
Ruth Taylor of Pittsfield went with her three children Akela, 5, and twins Daylan and Solan, 6, to the event.
"It's been awesome," Taylor said. "Third Thursday does great things for the community by getting people together and exposing our businesses."
Taylor also saw a practical side to more Halloween festivities.
"Halloween costumes are really expensive, so we wanted to get all the use out of them we can."
