Monument girls, Rohan Shastri will hit the courts for state tennis tourney

Wet weather forced another high school playoff game to be postponed on Friday.

Monument Mountain's girls tennis team will now play Manchester-Essex for the state Division III title today at 3 p.m. at St. John's High School in Shrewsbury. The match had originally been scheduled for Friday.

The Spartans already had their semifinal moved from St. John's to the Shrewsbury Health and Racquet Club on Monday. Monument beat Sutton 4-1 to reach today's final.

Mount Greylock's Rohan Shastri will also be at St. John's today in the state individual tournament. The semifinals begin at 9 a.m. with the championship at approximately 1 p.m.

PITTSFIELD -- Kyle Card and Steve Witkowski combined on a six-hitter, as Pittsfield Post 68 beat Lenoxdale at Clapp Park.

Card was backed up by a 14-hit attack in the victory for Post 68 (2-0).

In five shutout innings, Card didn't walk a batter and gave up three hits while striking out five. Witkowski, just getting back on the mound after suffering a broken foot during the high school season, gave up a sixth inning run on three hits in two innings of work.

"Kyle Card did very well today. Five innings and no walks, that's the key," said Post 68 manager Jim Mazzer. "He threw nice and relaxed."

Card had the opportunity to pitch relaxed because Post 68 staked him to a 7-0 lead after three innings.

A three-run first was all Card needed, and Brian Bonacquisti's two-run single was the key hit in the inning.

Alex Carusotto went 3 for 4 with three RBI for Post 68, while Bonacquisti was 2 for 3 with three RBI. Ryan Shook, Andrew Winston and Josh Berthiaume all had two hits each.

GREAT BARRINGTON -- Erik Derwitsch tossed a complete-game, seven-hitter in South Berkshire's win.

Derwitsch struck out eight, walked one and hit one batter.

Trailing 1-0 after a half-inning, South Berkshire took the lead for keeps with two runs in the bottom of the first. Dan Meandro hit an RBI double to score Colby Ruegr from second base, and Meandro came around on a passed ball and a wild pitch.

Rueger's RBI single in the second made it 3-1, and Derwitsch made the lead stand up.

The Aces got closer on Dom Traversa's RBI single in the fifth, but couldn't plate the tying run.

Meandro and Rueger had two hits each. Pat Latini struck out nine for the Aces, and was touched up for six hits and three walks.
