Monument, Lee boys hoops teams beaten in W. Mass. basketball

SPRINGFIELD -- A four-minute cold stretch in the third quarter doomed the Monument Mountain boys basketball team in a 76-60 loss to Renaissance in the Western Massachusetts Division III quarterfinals.

Renaissance took a four-point lead into halftime, but they outscored Monument 26-14 in the third to take a commanding lead into the final quarter.

"We went cold shooting in the third quarter and they got a good lead," Monument coach Mike Saporito said. "We were able to contain them and slow the down early, but they got their transition game going, and we were trying to play catch-up."

Peter Oggiani led Monument with 22 points, with four 3-pointers. Cam Powell had 12.

"It was a close game, but we did not have enough shots go down," Saporito said. "Pete kept us in the game. We just didn't hit shots."

Quaboag 81, Lee 37

WARREN -- The visiting Wildcats ran into a defensive buzzsaw in the Division IV quarterfinals.

Quaboag held Lee's leading scorer, Heamon Williams, to three points as the former Central Mass. team rolled on to a trip to the Curry Hicks Cage.

The Wildcats trailed 45-13 at halftime.

Sam Kelley had 12 points to lead the Wildcats. Quaboag's Jake Wisnewski had a game-high 26 points.
