Monument Mountain football rolls over St. Joe, 68-0

GREAT BARRINGTON -- Malik Wilbon and Mike Buffoni scored a pair of touchdowns and Monument Mountain rolled up 403 yards on the ground to overwhelm St. Joseph 68-0 on Friday.

It was the highest point total in the Spartans program’s 40-plus-year history.

"We always feel confident we’re going to win," said Monument quarterback Ryle O’Brien. "But this was kind of ridiculous."

"We didn’t want the game to turn out this way," said Monument coach Bill LaGrant. "We were running dives into the line at the end. The staff went over after the game to apologize to St. Joe, and they said, ‘Coach, don’t worry about it. You were running dives into the line and we couldn’t stop you.’ "

The Spartans scored every time they had the ball, including three touchdowns in a 90-second span to close out the second quarter and really put the visiting Crusaders in the soup.

Leading 32-0, Monument’s Buffoni ripped off a 44-yard run and a 35-yarder and backup quarterback Austin Pectal bolted for a 48-yard sprint and things were way out of hand at 52-0 at the half.

The second half saw the Spartans stay on the ground, and wind down the clock.

LaGrant played most of his roster. Eleven different players carried the ball, and O’Brien attempted no passes after the first quarter. There were 10 runs of 20 or more yards by seven different players.

The Crusaders didn’t help their cause by fumbling three times and throwing an interception. The Spartans’ defense, led by Peter Oggiani and James Allentuck, was solid.

Brendan Faas led the Crusaders with 14 yards rushing.
