GREAT BARRINGTON >> Only two days after the Monument Mountain girls tennis team eked out a victory over Lenox, the Spartans faced another tough test in Lee.

Monument stepped up and won again, 4-1 against the Wildcats, after the aforementioned 3-2 victory over the Millionaires. On the boys side, Monument swept Lee 5-0.

It was the first loss of the season for the Wildcat girls (5-1, 2-1 Berkshire League) while the Spartans improved to 3-0, 3-0.

The victory didn't come easy for the Spartans, though, as each doubles match went into a third set. The singles matches started the match for the girls, and Monument took a 2-1 lead. By the time the doubles took the court, the Spartans needed only a split.

They got the sweep, though, as Carly Shafiroff and Hailey Higgins defeated Sarah Winston and Maddie DeSantis of Lee 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 in first doubles. In second doubles, Gabi DeFelice and Olivia Jaffe beat Kate Delsignor and Anna Wang 6-4, 2-6, 6-0.

"I think being tested like this does a lot more for a player than winning a match in straight sets easily," Monument girls coach Jeff Caligari said. "Going three sets, playing under pressure and coming through, it does a lot for their confidence going forward."

In first singles, Monument's Cara Freadman defeated Suriana Lee 6-1, 6-0, to help get the Spartans off to a strong start.

"It was a good test," Freadman said of the Lee match. "We have a lot of depth, which helps out. We just want to play our best against everyone and perform our best no matter who we're playing."

Lee's lone win on the girls side was from Ava Martin, as she defeated Lexi Shumsky 6-1, 1-6, 6-0. In third singles, Monument's Ava Guidette beat Angelique Nejaime 6-0, 6-0.

"I said to the girls before we started, we don't lose," Lee girls coach Norma Comalli said. "We either win, or we learn. It couldn't get much closer, it was just a really good match."

On the boys side, Monument is now 2-1, 2-1 while Lee falls to 3-3, 1-2.

Kadin Shafiroff of Monument defeated Michael Comalli 6-0, 6-0 in first singles while the Spartans' Alec Goffin beat Jed Devarennes 6-1, 6-0 in second singles. In third singles, Rafael Guttierez defeated Christopher Petrescu 6-2, 6-2.

The Spartans, which have no seniors in their lineup, have only lost to county power Mount Greylock this season.

"We are right where we want to be," Monument boys coach Hans Doup said. "The kids are getting stronger every time, everybody learns something when they're on the court."

In first doubles, Jack White and Kevin Costello defeated Sam Polastri and Julian Nejaime 6-2, 6-2 while John Mack and Paulo Lichtenthal beat Lukas Loehr and Dominic Bartini 6-2, 7-5.
