Monument Mountain girls tennis advances to sectional semifinals with win over Lenox
GREAT BARRINGTON — The Monument Mountain versus Lenox girls tennis match was a Western Mass. final last season.
This year, the two squads had to settle for a quarterfinal contest.
After the Millionaires won the 2015 postseason matchup, it was the Spartans that took home the victory this time around. Fourth-seeded Monument (10-1) swept the doubles matches en route to the 4-1 victory over the fifth-seeded Millionaires (9-3).
Monument advances to the Western Mass. Division III semifinals, where it will meet either No. 1 Belchertown or No. 8 Greenfield. The Orioles and Green Wave face off on Saturday.
The Spartans and Millionaires played twice this season, with each winning on their home courts. Each of those matches was 3-2.
"I think it makes it tougher," Monument coach Jeff Caligari said of facing a team his squad was familiar with. "I'd rather play a team we don't know much about. All the girls know each other. It's pretty intense to have to play a team like Lenox. They're a very good team."
Cara Freadman won first singles for the Spartans 6-1, 6-0 over Victoria Vittori while Ava Guidette, also of Monument, won second singles against Liz Jarck 6-0, 6-2.
"It was a good match," Freadman said. "It was a little windy, so I just tried to stay consistent. She's pretty consistent, too."
Lenox battled back in third singles when Alex Trousilek outlasted Lexi Shumsky 6-3, 6-3, but the Millionaires couldn't pick up a victory in either doubles.
Monument's Olivia Jaffe and Gabbi DeFelice won second doubles 6-0, 6-0 over Sarah Baron and Rose Pehlert while Carly Shafiroff and Hailey Higgins held off Ella King and Morgan Hayden 7-6, 4-6, (10-7). The third set was just a tiebreaker since the match had already been decided in favor of Monument.
"We just want to take it one match at a time," Caligari said of his team's road back to the Western Mass. final. "Winning the match today, taking care of business, and then whoever comes next, comes next."
Despite making the final last year as No. 5 and No. 6 seeds, the two Berkshire County squads were each seeded outside of the top three once again. And to help prove Berkshire County's prowess in girls tennis, No. 7 Lee defeated No. 2 Frontier 3-2 on the other side of the bracket. In addition, seven of the last eight Western Mass. champions have been from Berkshire County in girls tennis.
"It was really, really a bummer," Lenox coach Melissa Baron said of her squad facing Monument in the quarterfinals. "I was surprised, and I was sad for both teams because these were the teams that met in the finals last year.
"They played fantastic tennis. We had a really good match today."
