Monument Mountain wins high school golf opener on tiebreaker

GREAT BARRINGTON -- The first four golfers for the Monument Mountain and Mount Greylock golf teams needed a tiebreaker to decide Thursday's season opener at Wyantenuck, and the Spartans' Kevin Murphy was two shots better than his Mountie counterpart in a 227-229 win.

The tiebreaker was the score of the fifth golfer for each school, and the Spartans' Murphy recorded a 50 to Greylock's Steven Jayko's 52.

"They may not have won a match all last year, but coach [Luke] Polidoro has done a great job with these kids," said Monument coach Tom Kinne. "Their top players outplayed our top players."

The Spartans' Owen Hunter was medalist with a 38.
