Monument Mountain wrestling earns dual win at Mount Greylock
WILLIAMSTOWN -- Monument Mountain is in position to claim the Berkshire County wrestling championship by itself for the first time in 15 years.
Spartans coach Gordie Soule, though, knows his work -- and the wrestlers' work -- isn't done. Not by a longshot.
"Now we have a few things ahead of us," Soule said after Monument's 43-23 dual win over a short-handed Mount Greylock squad on Wednesday. "We have a match with Wayland and Quabbin, and the dual state championships coming up. We have Western Mass., and hopefully we can push kids up to states."
Monument, in its second dual win over Greylock this season, got wins by pin from Nate Cormier (120 pounds), Samson Weiner (132), Mike Molina (152) and Terrance Powell (195), as well as a key decision going the way of Robert Kahlstrom (126) and a major-decision win for Mark Leon-Duque (170).
For Molina, who's still working through knee problems and wearing braces on both knees, Wednesday's dual win was the most important "by far." Still, even with that win and his own 13-2 major decision over Carl Swanson, he found things that could be fixed.
"We come out flat sometimes," Molina said. "We need to work on being more aggressive from the start, instead of the end."
Greylock got a technical-fall win from Jude Rorke (106), decisions in favor of Devin Pelletier (138) and CJ Lillie (145), and Johnny Colon's pin of Jonah Christianson at 182. They forfeited three matches to the Spartans.
Colon spent the latter portion of the first period avoiding a pin, with Christianson in control throughout the match. However, with less than 10 seconds to go in the second period, Christianson shot low. Colon was quicker, got under Christianson and took him to the mat. Four seconds later, Colon had the pin in what he called one of the toughest matches he's had this season.
"He's wicked strong, but everybody makes mistakes," Colon said. "He gave me the opportunity and I seized the moment on that one."
Still, the Mounties were missing four wrestlers due to injuries and what their coach, Ray Miro, termed "other reasons." Travis Hilchey and David O'Brien, two of Greylock's top competitors, weren't in uniform Wednesday, and their status for Saturday's Mountie Invitational is uncertain.
"We've got Western Mass. coming up in three more weeks, and we've got to be ready for that," Miro said.
Greylock has won or shared the county championship every year since 2000. That streak is now in serious jeopardy -- but that's all right with Miro as long as his team is in position to perform well in the postseason.
"It's OK to pass the torch," he said. "It's not the end of the world."
