Monument Mountain's Jill Svirida named MIAA Coach of the Year for boys swimming

GREAT BARRINGTON — Monument Mountain swim coach Jill Svirida has been honored by the MIAA for her efforts at the helm.

On Wednesday, Svirida was named the 2015-16 MIAA Coach of the Year for boys swimming and diving.

Nominated by Monument assistant principal Scott Annand, Svirida won the statewide award.

"I was just ecstatic, it brought me to tears when I first saw the email," Svirida said. "There are so many great coaches throughout the state, so many I've looked up to. There are some really fabulous coaches that I've gotten to know.

"Just to be considered one of the top coaches is really awesome. It's great to be recognized because you do put in a lot of work, especially behind the scenes. I'm proud of myself and I'm proud to represent Monument in that way."

Svirida, who also coaches the girls swim team at Monument, began as a coach in Berkshire County high school swimming as an assistant at Taconic for the 2003-04 season. After two years there, she took over as head coach of Lenox.

She was the head coach at Lenox for two seasons before the same co-op switched to the Monument name. Svirida did not coach in 2007-08, as she was in Africa volunteering, but she took over as Spartans coach for the 2008-09 season and just completed her eighth season there.

Svirida's teams have been very successful, as the boys have gone 30-0 over the past three seasons — including a 10-0 mark this year — while the girls have gone 29-1 over the same stretch. The boys were eighth at the Western Mass. meet this year.

And while Svirida is now being recognized for her job as coach, the process for nomination played out mostly behind the scenes.

"I honestly didn't know that much about it," Svirida said. "Mr. Annand announced it at our team banquet that he had nominated me for it, which was such an honor. I had to fill out some paperwork with our record, previous honors, coaching philosophy and a few other things like that."

According to the MIAA release containing the award-winner for each sport, every coach will be recognized at the sixth annual MIAA Coach of the Year/Student-Athlete of the Month Banquet on Thursday, May 26.

The winner of the 2015-16 MIAA Coach of the Year for girls swimming and diving was Barbara Toohey of Hanover.
