Moulton criticizes The Eagle for not disclosing newspaper owner's campaign contribution

NORTH ADAMS — Mayoral candidate Robert Moulton criticized The Berkshire Eagle on Thursday for not disclosing a contribution one of its owners made to his opponent's campaign.

Moulton wrote on his campaign Facebook page that he was "shocked" to learn that Hans Morris had donated to Thomas Bernard's campaign in September, and noted that the newspaper had not disclosed that information in a story about recently-filed campaign finance reports that was published in The Eagle on Thursday, Nov. 2.

Morris, managing partner at the venture capital firm Nyca Partners, is part owner of New England Newspapers Inc., which operates The Eagle.

Morris donated $250 to Bernard's campaign Sept. 5, according to the pre-election campaign finance report submitted this week.

"The Morris donation should have been included in the campaign finance story," said Kevin Moran, The Eagle's executive editor. "Hans Morris has not played a role in editorial decisions, including endorsements."

The Eagle story listed the top four donors to each campaign this year, but did not make note of Morris' contribution. Of the donations to Bernard's campaign this election, Morris' $250 contribution is tied for the 13th highest.
