LANESBOROUGH >> The Mount Greylock football team got off to a quick start against McCann Tech and never looked back. The Mounties forced a three-and-out on the Hornet's opening drive, and Pat Storie took the ensuing punt 65 yards to the end zone for a score. From there, Greylock never trailed en route to a 41-13 win at Bill Laston Field on Friday.
"We've been doing a great job on offense this season. That punt return definitely got us fired up," Quarterback Michael Wellspeak said. "We've got to continue doing better every week, show up to practice every day next week and be focused on next Friday."
The Mounties benefitted from strong special-teams play all game, with Storie, Cal Messina and Sean McCormack picking up big yards in the return game.
After losing the ball on a fumble on its second possession, Greylock scored on its next two drives as Devin Pelletier and Wellspeak found the end zone on running plays. Storie added his second score on a five-yard run to start the second half. A 63-yard strike from Wellspeak to Storie put Greylock up 35-0 with 5 minutes and nine seconds left in the third.
McCann managed only 77 yards on offense, as the under-manned Hornets struggled to generate many positive plays. Justin Meczywor got the start at quarterback for an injured Mike Ferrara, and did an admirable job in his first-ever start under center. But, he rarely had time to throw and the Greylock defensive line did a great job of disrupting the timing of the offense. The Hornets had one possession in the first half in Greylock territory after the fumble, but Corbin Richardson was stopped for a three-yard loss on third down, forcing a punt. Overall, the team's youth was exploited by a veteran Greylock squad.
"We hung in there all night long," McCann Tech coach Bob LeClair said. "We've had to make quite a few changes. We're a MASH unit over here with somebody going down every week. ... We're playing a lot of young, inexperienced kids. A lot of them are sophomores out there and they're being thrown into this breach and it's sink or swim."
The Hornets finally got on the scoreboard as Lucas Jamros jumped on a bad snap on punt attempt in the end zone for the score. Andrew Koch scored the final points of the game on a five-yard run.
Pelletier led the Mounties with 71 yards rushing on nine carries and one score. Storie had 38 yards rushing on seven carries, one catch for 63 yard and three total scores. Wellspeak finished with 92 yards through the air.
For the Mounties, they improve to 4-0 and seem to be in the driver's seat of Division IV-A. After last week's late-game stand to defeat Ware, Greylock coach Andrew Agostini said winning a close game can give the team a boost. After another strong performance, the Mounties don't appear to be slowing down.
"The tough games — you've got to be able to pull them out," he said. "That was what last week was. Everybody had to contribute, literally everybody on the team. A game like that can propel you, but we've got to continue to get better. There's a lot of stuff we can fix, a lot of things we can clean up, I don't think we're playing our best football, but we'll get there."
