Mount Greylock wins baseball opener at home

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Mount Greylock baseball coach Steve Messina is always happy after an opening-day win. Monday's win made him smile just a bit more.

Greylock pitchers Robby Buffis and Adam Hall held St. Joseph to four hits as the Mounties beat the Crusaders 7-2. It was Greylock's second day on a baseball field all spring.

"It was kind of surreal. We hadn't been out on a field," said Messina, whose team scrimmaged in Connecticut on Sunday. "When you consider that, it is a good feeling. We're all in the same boat."

Buffis gave up one unearned run on three hits with five walks and 10 strikeouts. Hall, a sophomore, made his varsity debut by pitching the last two innings. He surrendered a hit and two walks while striking out three.

Buffis walked St. Joe's Kyle Crocker with the bases loaded in the top of the first inning to plate the Crusaders' only run. Greylock answered with two runs in the home first. Losing pitcher Devon Johnston walked Nick DiSanti and Buffis with the bases loaded, accounting for the two runs.

Ian Brink and Jack Thistle each had two hits for Greylock.

Aspen Sawyer started the game for Monument, but left after the first inning with an injury suffered on a play at the plate. Aanisah Taylor entered in relief of Sawyer, and the Warriors bats came to life with 22 runs over the next four innings for the mercy-rule victory.

Bridget Lussier led Wahconah with two hits including a home run and five RBI. Heather Bradbury led Monument with a hit and a run scored.
