Neal: Release of memo 'reckless and unprecedented'
U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal, D-Springfield, released the following statement Friday, after President Donald Trump authorized the release of the controversial classified memo written by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devon Nunes questioning the credibility and integrity of our nation's top law enforcement and intelligence officials.
"The release of the classified Nunes memo against the objections of the FBI and the Justice Department is reckless and unprecedented. I believe it is a partisan attempt by House Republicans to discredit both our nation's top law enforcement officials and the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
"Even FBI Director Christopher Wray has expressed his grave concerns about the national security implications of making this document public. Our law enforcement and intelligence officials take an oath of loyalty to the Constitution, not the Executive Branch. Questioning their integrity and independence is deeply troubling for those who believe strongly in the fundamental principle of separation of powers.
"I am hopeful that today's partisan actions by House Republicans will not distract Special Counsel Mueller (from) continuing his investigation into allegations of collusion by Russian government officials in the 2016 presidential campaign. The American people deserve to know the truth."
