New administrators at Adams-Cheshire schools look back on first six months
The 2012-13 school year in Berkshire County brought a number of changes in administrative staff at local schools, from both the K-12 sector and in higher education.
The Learning page will be running a series of articles briefly highlighting these new administrators and what they've learned half a year into their job, based on their responses to an email questionnaire.
This week's report features three administrators from the Adams-Cheshire Regional School District: Superintendent Kristen Gordon, Hoosac Valley Middle and High School Principal Vinnie Regan and C.T. Plunkett Elementary School Principal Michelle Colvin.
The next group of profiles will run March 26.
Meet Kristen Gordon
Job: Superintendent of Adams-Cheshire Regional School District.
Hometown and current residence: Adams.
Previous position: Principal of C.T. Plunkett Elementary School in Adams.
A favorite thing about your new job: I love working with the staff, students and families. I love looking at the "big picture" and creating "laser-like focus" around specific issues. I enjoy being the educational leader of such a top-notch district where I observe unbelievable dedication every day.
One goal you have or issue you'd like to address during the current school year: A new strategic plan that will provide a clear direction for the next five years.
Meet Vinnie Regan
Job: Principal at Hoosac Valley Middle and High School, Adams-Cheshire Regional School District.
Hometown and current residence: Lanesborough is my hometown, Windsor is where I reside.
Previous position: Staff, teacher and administrator at Hillcrest Educational Centers.
A favorite thing about your new job: I enjoy getting to work with so many great students and families from Adams, Cheshire and Savoy and helping them achieve their goals.
One goal you have or issue you'd like to address during the current school year: Improving our teaching, learning, and "way of work" to increase student achievement and professional satisfaction for all.
Meet Michelle Colvin
Job: Principal at C.T. Plunkett Elementary School, Adams-Cheshire Regional School District.
Hometown and current residence: Born, raised and attended schools in North Adams, 1993 graduate from Drury High School, now living in Pittsfield.
Previous work position: Principal at Berlin Elementary School in Berlin, N.Y.
A favorite thing about your new job: Working with a faculty and staff who are incredibly child-centered in their work. Education and what it means to educate a child has changed significantly over the past 10 years and working with teachers and staff who are prepared to face the challenge head-on, and support our students and their families is the absolute best part of my job.
One goal you have or issue you'd like to address during the current school year: The two most important pieces to my job during my first year are: 1) Learning names and faces of the culture and community, the PTG, the families, the faculty and staff and most importantly the students who are the heart of the C.T. Plunkett Elementary School community, and 2) Working with teacher leaders, fellow administrators and teams to develop action plans and goals that will continue to bring C.T. Plunkett Elementary forward over the next three to five years.
