New Berkshire Community College president confirmed

Wednesday June 20, 2012

PITTSFIELD -- Make it official: Ellen Kennedy is the new president of Berkshire Community College.

The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education on Tuesday unanimously confirmed Kennedy to succeed Paul Raverta as BCC's seventh president in its 53-year history.

Last month, BCC's board of trustees recommended Kennedy for the job. Raverta stepped down from the post in January.

Kennedy, the college's interim president since Raverta left, will formally begin her new role on July 1. Since arriving at the West Street campus in 2008, Kennedy had been vice president for administration and finance and chief financial officer for the college.

Massachusetts Education Secretary Paul Reville views Kennedy as a welcome addition to the state's college scene.

"I want to thank Ellen Kennedy for her willingness to serve in this role and look forward to her partnership in moving forward both the Berkshire Community College campus and our entire public higher education system here in Massachusetts," Reville said in a prepared statement.

Kennedy welcomes the challenge of becoming a college president and continuing BCC's role to prepare students for employment or additional higher education.

"We must figure out a balance between work force and career programs, an issue we need to work on statewide," she said following Tuesday's vote.

The Williamstown resident also values BCC's long-standing relationship with area high schools to help students get a head start on their college education.

"We want to be joined at the hip with school systems around the county," she said.

Kennedy was one of three finalists for the BCC presidency Thirty-eight people applied for the job.
