New hearing set for Dalton officer accused of assault

PITTSFIELD — Dalton Police Officer James A. Scace is scheduled to return to court Feb. 18 for a further status hearing and possible arraignment for allegedly assaulting a woman last July.

Scace, 47, was in Central Berkshire District Court on Thursday for a status hearing in his criminal case at which the new date was set.

He has been on administrative leave from the department since Oct. 26 in connection with the allegations.

Scace has yet to be formally arraigned on the charges and has invoked the state's Valor Act, which allows military veterans without a criminal record to be considered for access to treatment services in lieu of prosecution.

He is facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (two counts), domestic assault and battery, strangulation and witness intimidation.
