Nicole Alfonsi leads PHS girls soccer in win over Taconic

Sunday September 9, 2012

PITTSFIELD -- When the rain stopped, Pittsfield was just getting started.

Nicole Alfonsi opened the scoring against city rival Taconic, working a give-and-go with Sydney Deluce about five minutes after heavy rain subsided at Kirvin Park on Saturday. The junior didn’t stop there, tacking on another goal before halftime in a 6-0 rout.

"Me and Syd pass really well together," Alfonsi said of the icebreaker. "We’ve been playing together since we were like five. We always know what we’re going to do."

Alfonsi finished with two goals and assisted two others -- including one by her sister Kara. Rachael Hunt, Chelsea Lucaroni and Carly Robinson all added goals for the Generals (1-0-1, 1-0-0 North). Allie Hunt made one save in net, combining with Colby Aitken for the shutout.

Under constant pressure from the get-go, Taconic (0-1-0, 0-1-0) was able to keep Pittsfield off the board for the those first 20 minutes in a downpour that was treacherous at times. When the rain lightened up, the Generals began to flex their muscle and the Braves couldn’t keep up.

"We’re not in game shape yet," said Taconic defender Molly Barbarotta. "We’re in offseason shape. We can all run but we can’t run to the ball, wait a few seconds and then run to the ball again. We’re working on it. We’ll be there. We’re just not there yet."

Pittsfield was first to the ball most of the game, keeping pressure on Taconic’s defense. When the conditions improved, the ball became more predictable. That allowed the first give-and-go goal for Nicole Alfonsi. Twelve minutes later, she found her sister, who cut the ball back in the box and blasted it into the net. Nicole Alfonsi made it 3-0, putting home a rebound off a penalty kick with 53 seconds to play.

"We played better as the game went on," Generals coach Andy Waluszko said. "Passing instead of just booting it. When it’s windy like this and it’s raining, you never know what’s going to happen."

Both teams get defending North Division champion Lenox next. Pittsfield has just one day to prepare for a Monday night trip south, while Taconic is off for 10 days before the Millionaires come to Pittsfield. That will give Braves coach John Flynn plenty of time to prep his young team.

"[The Generals] were physically fit and they had a nice touch," Flynn said. "We’ve been talking about it all week at practice, ‘We got to do this. We got to do this.’ The nice thing is I think they finally saw that we’re not just reaching, that they need to get in game shape.

"Also, we have an inexperienced team. We only have two regular starting players coming back. We have a bunch of girls who played on JV last year. They’re trying to get their legs underneath them, too."
